49ers

  • 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said of the team’s FA needs: “We’ll always be aggressive. We were aggressive last year. You’ve got to look at what your options are. Being aggressive is going out and getting guys. We went and got all the guys we targeted at the beginning and I don’t feel we lost anybody. “(Cam Inman)

Buccaneers

Buccaneers veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick says he would like to be back in Tampa Bay next year and understands that it’s unlikely he’ll have shot to start with another team.

“At this point in my career, I’m not going to be given or gifted a chance to start anywhere probably,” Fitzpatrick said, via JoeBucsFan.com. “You know, there’s a lot of things that weigh into it now for me now that maybe didn’t years ago, just in terms of family and different situations. I enjoyed the year I’ve had here and even just the Tampa area in general. But this team, I think Jameis did a good job this year and you can see the improvement in his game. I’d enjoy being back. I really enjoyed my role this year, but you never know. We’ll see what happens.

Cowboys

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday during an interview with 105.3 The Fan that keeping Jason Garrett in place as their head coach is “not even a thought” for him.

“It’s not even a thought for me,” Jones said, per Jon Machota. “I think we’re in a good spot with Jason.

  • Jones said of WR Dez Bryant‘s frustration with the offense: “I think Dez is right. We need more from Dez. We need more big plays. … He’s a top player on our team. We need more from that area.” (Jon Machota)
  • According to Jones, he would like OC Scott Linehan and DC Rod Marinelli back next year. (Jon Machota)
  • Drew Davison points out that Cowboys assistants with expiring contracts include QB coach Wade Wilson, WR coach Derek Dooley, RB coach Gary Brown, LB coach Matt Eberflus, and DB coach Joe Baker.

Packers

Packers president Mark Murphy announced that whoever they hire as their next GM will have the power to fire and hire their next head coach.

In regards to GM Ted Thompson transitioning to a new position within the organization, Murphy explained that this will allow him to focus on what he does best.

We kept coming back to he’s a scout at heart, he loves it, it’s what he loves to do,” Murphy said, per Michael Cohen“I think from Ted’s perspective this was a chance to still do what he loves and still help us win championships. As I looked at it I thought this is something that’s good for the organization as well as Ted.

  • Murphy mentioned that they have “several very strong internal candidates” for the GM position and he thinks it will be an attractive position. (Michael Cohen)
  • Murphy denied the report that he was instructed by the board of directors to fire Thompson. (Michael Cohen)
  • Rob Demovsky mentions that the one-year extension signed by HC Mike McCarthy during the season will help him attract defensive coordinator candidates.
  • According to Demovsky, it’s possible that changes could be coming to the Packers’ offensive coaching staff.
Green Bay will need to replace WRs coach Luke Getsy, who’s now the offensive coordinator at Mississippi State and it’s possible that they could move offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett back to WRs coach.
  • An NFL source tells Rob Demovsky that the Packers GM position is a “top-three job” in the NFL: “It’s a top-three job in the league. You look for stability. That’s what you have in Green Bay.
  • Meanwhile, an agent added that he actually thinks it’s the best job to have: “It’s the best job in the NFL. Two reasons: No owner and Aaron Rodgers.”
