Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing multiple league sources, reports that buzz is building for the 49ers to hire former Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik as their director of player personnel or in an equivalent role.
Sunday evening, the 49ers surprisingly hired John Lynch as their GM, but considering that he has no prior experience working directly in player personnel, many have suggested that the 49ers will target some candidates with high-level scouting experience.
According to Florio, it’s also possible that current 49ers assistant GM Tom Gamble other members of the front office could remain in place under Lynch and new HC Kyle Shanahan.
Albert Breer mentioned earlier that whoever the 49ers hire underneath Lynch will be vital and added that Dominik is someone to keep an eye on along with former Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey.
According to Breer, Dominik and Hickey both watched practices together in Mobile last week, which could be groundwork for those two to reunite in San Francisco.
Dominik, 45, began his NFL executive career with the Buccaneers as their director of pro scouting back in 1997. He spent 12 years in that role before he was promoted to the team’s GM position in 2009.
Dominik has been working as an analyst for ESPN the past few years.
During his five years as GM, Dominik’s team produced a record of 28-52 (35 percent), which included one winning season and no playoff appearances.
We’ll have more regarding the 49ers and possible front office additions as the news is available.
